Tosca.Souvenirs
"Zamislite jednu udobnu, pomalo zadimljenu sobu, nekoliko upaljenih sveća i dva čoveka u njoj - Richard Dorfmeister i Rupert Huber, domaćini večeri. Pozvali su svoje prijatelje, muzičare, i rekli im da ponesu svoje verzije pesama sa albuma J.A.C."

Odgovori na pitanja koji je ishod ovakve jedne večeri, ko je sve prisustvovao i šta je ko od njih doneo, mogu se pronaći na albumu "Tosca.Souvenirs - The J.A.C. Remixes", objavljenom za G-Stone.

SIMON GOSS
BIG UP BELGRADE!! Last Friday I arrived in Belgrade with my wife Patti and a fat satchel of records. Neither of us had been to Serbia & Montenegro before, and trip came about through my good friend Nick Lawrence, owner of London’s Altered Vibes label. Nebojsa (Schwabe) was there to meet us and so began three days of discovering a truly fascinating City and its people.

I was especially grateful to get this opportunity to promote my own label, Wah Wah 45’s, as we tour all over Europe with our first compilation, “Underground Hits and Exclusive Bits”. Nebojsa took us straight to B92 for a live interview with a very BBC like atmosphere. Over the weekend I was lucky enough to have a further four interviews – the kind of publicity I can only dream of back in London! We then dropped by the Monster Hostel, which was our home until yesterday morning. A big shout to Relja and the crew at Monster for taking care of us there.

Maria from B92 joined us for some good food at a Kafanna where the guys in the house band sat and chatted before getting jiggy. On several occasions many people would ask what impressions we had before coming to Belgrade. Apart from feeling (like many Londoners I suspect) embarrassingly ignorant of Eastern Europe in general, we were initially just glad to get away for the weekend. Travelling as dj is a great way to really experience what life is like somewhere else, and over the weekend we were struck by everyone’s warmth and generosity despite what can be such a harsh climate in every sense.

Friday night culminated in the main event – a gig with the TESTERA CREW at ANA 4 PISTOLJA. Although feeling a bit nervous about the number of ancient records in my satchel I was encouraged by the fact that it was dark enough not to show! There was also the diversion of a TV interview (where I’m sure I was talking nonsense!). An hour and a half later I was relaxing and hitting my stride. At our Wah Wah 45’s residency at Cargo here in London I mix up all styles of music without beat mixing, so I wasn’t too sure how this would work in Belgrade. I was really chuffed with the reaction – it ain’t easy dancing in a stone cave in the dark!! I really love to dj this way as I feel its all about good sounds and good feelings, and not “scenes”, as they tend to become narrow in approach and atmosphere. My boast on the Wah Wah crowd here in London is that it is truly diverse and covers a sixteen to sixty age group!

Saturday began with a walk into town along Kneza Milosa, followed by some lunch at the truly marvellous Question Mark. A harsh reminder of how tough the economy is as such a meal would cost 30 euros for two here in London. After a stroll through the shops it was time to hit B92 again on the TRANS GLOBAL SUPER SESSION on which we featured Rosie Brown, Max Cole, Belleruche and Alison Crockett. We spent the evening hanging out with Nebojsa, where at one point we were sitting upstairs in a jazz club when the electricity cut out. He then introduced us to a unique bar in a squat at the bottom of an old apartment block – only in Belgrade! On Sunday we met at the Student Cultural Institute to browse for vinyl, and I was able to buy a couple before the Police stepped in to say hello and begin making enquiries. I don’t think they were looking for elusive funk records. Fortunately Nebojsa and Matjia may have anticipated this, and took me to a shop where the owner was kind enough to open up. I am now loving Lezaj Od Suza by Josipa Lisac, even if I have major struggles singing along. As a lifelong West Ham United fan, I was delighted when our hosts took us to see Partizan Belgrade v Zemun, although after 47 minutes it was never going to be a classic, so we headed off to the Red Star stadium just down the road.

Football here is now as expensive as going to the Opera at Covent Garden, and all clubs here charge admission just to take a short tour of the ground. There was no charge at Partizan, and we just strolled in at Red Star. Partizan did seem pretty bleak, and the fans reminded me of English football in the eighties, which could get pretty scary sometimes. If I’m in town on derby day, I might just stay in the record shop. After some great takeaway soup (you do great things with sausages and beans) we headed over to the Zoo and the Park, where we caught an impromptu gig by a noted folk singer – having a jam with his middle aged fans. I am not sure if people of this age are allowed to have this much fun in a public place in London. In the early evening we headed down for the FREESTYLE SESSION on Venus Radio, where I was able to get on the decks for a mix and plug the lounge club session Nebojsa and the guys had organised at PLASTIC. We then headed back to B92 to complete an interview for the BALANCE show with Jazzmate. Matija and Nebojsa then took us to the very snazzy Zaplet, before we all pitched up at PLASTIC.

We had one of those sessions where only 20 or so people showed up, but we all had a dance and a good time. For me it was a great last chance to play for new friends before even having to think about London. Having said our goodbyes, I managed to get all of four hours sleep before waking up to serious snow.

A very big thank you to Nebojsa for being a great host, supported by Matija
And the rest of the TESTERA crew.

alternately deep
